Yearly Club Statistics
2018 Statistics
2018 was a busy year for the San Antonio Scrabble Club. At the end of May we welcomed new member 8 year old (now 9) Ricky Rodriguez. Ricky has been featured on KABB and KSAT. There is a link from the KSAT homepage to his interview which just aired last Sunday night. For someone so young he has an impressive vocabulary and a promising future ahead of him in Scrabble. At the end of August we also welcomed back Norma DeJesus who had been away for over a year; we're glad to have you back again. Also in August we had two gentlemen who visited us from Pakistan. Robert offered to play one of them in their native Collins dictionary and he beat them! In December two alumni from Jennifer's Rogers Middle School Scrabble club from a couple of years ago visited; we hope they're able to come back again.
Before I get to individual accomplishments I'd like to issue a disclaimer. The records are only as good as the stat sheets that you fill out and turn it to me. Please try to fill them out accurately. Sometimes I can reconstruct scores from other stat sheets but it's much easier not to have to. It's also possible I may have forgotten or overlooked something. Please let me know if you think I'm missing anything.
Nancy Scott
Nancy came one time last summer. She won two out of five games and averaged 351. She played 4 bingos including the nice FARRIERS.
Sylvia Phillips
Sylvia played 11 games in 7 weeks and had five bingos. She's always a pleasant opponent to play against.
Mariah Smith
Mariah played 13 games in five sessions; she won seven and averaged 388 points a game and had 15 bingos. Among her interesting bingos were BAGASSE and PERINEAL. She went undefeated one week. Mariah is moving to San Antonio next year and will be a welcome addition to our club. Maybe she can push Greg a little.
Ricky Rodriguez
Ricky started coming on May 31. He played in 35 games over 16 weeks and averaged over 316 points a game. He played the very nice bingo PARKIEST which was challenged. Although he lost more games than he won he was a challenging opponent and lost some close games.
Norma DeJesus
Norma started coming back on August 30. She won 16 out of 43 games and averaged 342 a game and had 20 bingos. She had a 394 point tie game with Matt and played the word SIXTEEN for 125 points.
Trish Coriden
Trish played 74 games in 22 weeks. She won 27 games, averaged 346 points per game and had 53 bingos. She had three bingos over 90 points: SLASHES a double-double for 94, and FURIOUS and SHOVELED for 95. Other interesting bingos she played included CONGERS, NIBBING and PENITENT. Sunny played in 132 games over 36 weeks. She won 40 averaging 350 points a game and had 111 bingos. She had several sessions with 5 or 6 bingos. She played RHIZOID for 93, DEBARKED for 94 and had a triple-triple SERENEST for 122 points. Other interesting words she played included CHARNELS, CONDYLE, POTTLES, SEAGOING and WASSAIL. One evening she beat Greg, Robert and Matt. She had one session where was undefeated and averaged 400 points a game. She beat Matt in one game 438-240.
Jennifer De Waelsche

I had the high game of 616 and 6 other games over 500: 554, 553, 524, 518, 514, and 505. One game against Robert I bingoed out with JITTERS for 94 points and picked up the FPWZ off his rack for an additional 44 and a 138 point out-play. I had the high turn of the year INDULGED, a triple-triple for 140, CONJOINT for 118 and the nine letter words PATRONISE and JAPANNING. I was undefeated five times and had 15 nights averaging over 400 with a high of 470 (with 10 bingos).
Robert Fenske
Robert won 68 out of 110 games (62%) averaged 382 points per game and played 152 bingos (1.4 per game). He had 4 weeks where he went undefeated including a stretch in the summer when he won 9 games in a row. He had 8 sessions over 400 with a high of 418 and had nights with 10 and 9 (twice) bingos. He played the bingos SEJEANT (121), PILFERS (105), EXPLODE and RESPECT both for 100, EVERTING for 98 and the 9, OBJECTORS.
Greg Stone
As usual Dr. Stone dominated the statistics again. He won 104 out of 137 games (76%) averaged 426 points per game and had 233 bingos (1.7 per game). Out of 37 weeks he only had 9 where didn't average over 400 and five of those were still in the 390s. He went undefeated 12 times and had weeks where he averaged 495, 487, 468 and 467. His high game was 598 (just missed 600) and the same night he also had a 505. He had an amazing 16 games over 500: 598, 575, 546, 548, 546, 545, 533 (twice) 530, 526, 508, 506, 505 (twice), 503, and 502. One game against Matt he had 4 bingos in a row. He played the 9 ESTUARINE and other interesting ones included AECIDIUM, ARROZES, BALDPATE, COWSLIPS, ECLOGUE, EYESHOT, FOUETTE, LIRIOPE, NOVERCAL, and TRIPOLIS. He saw, but was unable to play THALWEG. We may need to import better players to give him more of a challenge.
2017 Statistics
The San Antonio Scrabble Club met 49 weeks last year. Matt was the only one who attended every week. We had 20 different players attend sessions. We had peak attendance of 10 in January and February but usually averaged around 6. We only had one player visit from out of town, Mariah Smith from Liberty Hill and the Austin Scrabble Club. There were 21 500 point games; Robert had 7, Matt had 6, Greg had 4 and Jason had two in the same evening. Jennifer had the high game of the year, a 590 against Robert with 4 bingoes (including the very nice LINOLEUM). Matt had a 584 and Sunny had a 565. Matt had the high turn of the year with the triple-triple ESCARPED against Greg for 158 points. Here are some individual highlights of our club regulars:

Mike Santos
Mike started coming to the club at the end of 2016 but moved to the Houston area in April. He is a very nice guy and a good player and is also missed. He played 50 games, averaging 339 points a game. He played 31 bingos averaging .6 per game. He played SALAMIS for an outbingo to beat Matt and also had the interesting play FOOTREST.
Nancy Scott
Nancy played 26 games early in the year. She averaged 365 points per game and played 23 bingoes for an average of just under one per game. She had the interesting bingoes AUTUMNS and EINKORN. We hope you can come again Nancy. We miss you too. Maybe you can get Brett Perkins to come back again and bring you in from Schertz.
Trish Coriden
Trish played 122 games, averaged 334 points per game and had 88 bingoes (.7 per game). She had a memorable Groundhog's Day; on Feb.2 she had 8 bingoes including two games with consecutive bingoes. She had the interesting plays CAVEATOR, LINNIES and SLURPIER.

He won 8 games in row at the Mid-Cities tournament in September (including all of his games on the second day to overtake Matt) to come in second and also came in second in the second division in Schertz in November.
Matt De Waelsche
Matt played the most games in club last year, 215 and also had the most bingoes. He won 128 (59%) averaged 390 points per game and had 305 bingoes (1.4 per game). He had 19 nights averaging over 400 and was undefeated 4 times (twice going 5-0) and had nights with 13, 12 and 10 (6) bingoes. He had games of 515 (2), 524, 536, 552 and 584. In addition to the high play of the year ESCARPED (158tt), he played the 9s REMINDING, RETINULAR and TOURISTAS and also played DEUTZIA, FELLATOR, GAMBIERS, JALOUSIE, LYRICONS, OODLINS, PROETTE and SHAKOES. He came in third in the Mid-Cities tournament, winning six games in a row on the first day but fading down the stretch on the second day, and was Gibsonized in the second division of the Austin/Georgetown tournament in December going 13-2 and picking up almost 100 rating points.
Greg Stone
As usual, Dr. Stone dominated most of the local statistics again. He was undefeated 5 weeks in a row in September and October and averaged over 400 points in 22 of the 32 weeks he played. His highest session average was 458 on May 11. He won 95 out of 121 games (79%) averaged 407 points per game and had 193 bingoes (1.6 per game). He had games of 515, 527 and 529 (2). Here is just a small sample of some of the exotic words he played: ARGONAUT, AVENSES, BANAUSIC, BANDMATE, CRAGSMEN, DASYURE, DEGAMIS, DRAWBARS, DYSPNEA, FENNECS, GARBOARD, LORGNONS, MATTOIDS, ODDMENT, and PANGENE. We need to bring in some other good players to challenge him!
I'd also like to acknowledge our sole visitor in 2017 Mariah Smith. Mariah visited our club twice on Nov. 2 and Dec. 28. In Nov. she went 3-0 and beat both Greg and Matt averaging 453 points per game and had 4 bingoes. In December she went 1-2 averaged 333 points and had 5 bingoes. Thanks for visiting our club. Please come again. You're always welcome here.

Woody Cauthon

Pierce
A friend of Jason's came four weeks during September before moving to Boston. He played nine games and averaged 325 points per game. He's a marketing guru and may help us in outreach efforts to recruit new players.
Nancy Scott
Nancy was the deserving 2016 inductee into the Texas Scrabble Hall of Fame. She was only able to come three weeks. She played ten games and ten bingoes and averaged 336 points per game. Her nicest bingo was WATCHDOG.
Earl Beverly (RIP) d. April 18
Big Earl was only able to come for three weeks early last year before succumbing to complications related to diabetes. He played 13 games, seven bingoes and averaged 334 points per game. He provided a lot of levity at the club with his made up words like SLITTERED and LIBIA ("I guarantee that's good, brother!") We will all miss his good nature and robust sense of humor. He was a wonderful man.
Out of Town Visitors
On April 7 Tim Bottorff, one of the top rated players from the Orlando area came to club. He was attending a professional conference in Austin and came down to San Antonio just to play with us. We treated him well and allowed him to go undefeated. He went 4-0, played ten bingoes (including MONGEES, QUARTANS and RINGTONE) and averaged 413 points per game.
The following week William Barfuss from Sante Fe, NM came to club. He also played at the Austin club the previous Monday. He won two out of three games, played five bingoes and averaged 402 points per game.
On Aug. 11, the day after Nationals in Ft. Wayne ended, we were visited by Anita Rackham from Canada (near Quebec). Anita placed in her division at Nationals and won some money. Her husband had a convention here in San Antonio so they decided to come after Nationals. She only won one out of five games, played four bingoes and averaged 340 points. She said we beat her so badly that she wasn't ever going to come back to our club again.

Matt played the most nights (48), the most games (215) and had the most total wins (136) and bingos (292).
Here are some other individual highlights of the year:

Nancy was only able to play in 20 games but won half of them. Her average for the year was 354. She had an undefeated night averaging 388.
Greg Randolph started coming in September with Jason. He won 51% of his games and averaged 355. He played the interesting bingos bitchily, sueding and unsells.

Jason only started coming back again in September but he definitely made up for lost time. Despite playing in only 56 games he still had over 100 bingos. He had one night with 12 bingos, three with 10, two with 9 and three with 8. Seven of the twelve club sessions he played in he averaged over 400. He won 56% of his games and averaged 403. He was the only other player besides Greg to average over 400 points a game. He had two 500 games (511 and 507). His high play of the year was AZULEJO (129) which he played in the same game that I played jalousie (two interesting J words in the same game!) and is my personal choice for the play of the year. Some of the other interesting bingos he played were desalting (9), assonate, atonics, clansmen, laagered, oliguria and zenithal. He also got away with phonies like boredish and pileitis.
In addition to the high turn BEMINGLE (176), Greg also had two other triple-triples GARLANDS for 140 and GARROTER for 131. Just a few of the other interesting bingos he played were: pioneered(9), burtons, chytrids, cloques, cuisses, fleabite, fulmines, pledgets, prenomen, randans, shorans and vomicas. He got away with phonies like stephens, subrenal, tearaway and thallode. He had two of his ten 500 point games on the same night (524 and 501). He was definitely the San Antonio Scrabble Club Player of the Year but Jason is closing the gap and gaining on him.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to our successful Schertz Labor Day tournament last weekend. It sounded like it was very well received and everyone wants us to have it again next year.
An interesting anomaly from the tournament: all four division high turns were turned in by San Antonio players, Earl in Div. 4, T.A. in Div. 3, Matt in Div. 2 and Greg in Div. 1.

He played 31 bingos averaging .6 per game. He played SALAMIS for an outbingo to beat Matt and also had the interesting play FOOTREST.
Nancy Scott
Nancy played 26 games early in the year. She averaged 365 points per game and played 23 bingoes for an average of just under one per game. She had the interesting bingoes AUTUMNS and EINKORN.
